Bullet Blueprint for Common Core Foundational Skills

This course has been cancelled.

This online course is open only to educators working in the AEA 9 service area.

This Professional Development course will provide the participants with a hands-on blueprint in both understanding and applying the Common Core Foundational Skills. The phonetic code will be demystified with an easy-to-follow Voweletics™ instructional method. Participants will develop proficiency and confidence in understanding the basic phonetic skills required for excellent word decoding in single and multi-syllabic words; resulting in improved knowledge and teaching of reading and spelling. As stated in the Report of the National Reading Panel, “It is critical for teachers to understand that systematic phonics instruction can be provided in an entertaining, vibrant and creative manner.” This course provides instruction in exactly that manner.

Bullet Classwide Interventions in Tier 1: Expecting Growth for All Learners

There will be two repeat sessions of this one-day workshop.

Classwide Interventions are quick, simple, and time bound researched literacy routines, implemented to all students in the tier 1 environment. Literacy classwide interventions are designed to provide additional instructional supports for one or more of the foundational literacy skills (concepts, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, phonics/decoding, irregular/sight words, fluency, oral language, vocabulary, comprehension, and/or spelling/writing.) Learning targets are aligned to skills along the literacy-learning continuum where proficiency is expected, yet data indicates that nearly 60% of the class still falls short of mastery. Outcomes are measured for all students.

You may order the manuals before March 1 and receive it at the workshop, or place the order on your own at: Univ. of Minnesota, PRESS manuals

Bullet ELA Unit Standards: Grades 9-12

Participants in these trainings should have a working knowledge of the Iowa Core English Arts Standards: history, development, format/structure, and meaning of the standards and their vocabulary. To support the implementation of the Iowa Core ELA standards, AEA reading consultants worked with teams of teachers to develop grade-level, year-long K-12 Scope and Sequence charts. In these scope and sequence charts, teachers find the ELA standards divided into teachable units.

Participants will examine resources provided for implementation: the K-12 Scope and Sequence and the Unit Planning Organizer for units 1-5 for grades 9-12, and unit 6 for grades 9-10. They will have some work time to develop standards-based lessons aligned to each unit.

Goals of the trainings:
1. Participants will examine the K-12 Scope and Sequence.
2. Participants will study the Unit Planning Organizer for their grade.
3. Participants will plan standards-based instruction based on the Unit Planning Organizer.

Each workshop will spend two days covering the following ELA Standards Units, grades 9-12:
Unit 1: 7/18/14 & 7/25/14
Unit 2: 9/22/14 & 9/23/14
Unit 3: 10/16/14 & 10/17/14
Unit 4: 2/19/15 & 2/20/15
Unit 5: 3/25/15 & 3/26/15
Unit 6: 4/9/15 & 4/10/15 (grades 9-10 only)

You may earn credit for attending 2 or more of the two-day workshops.
Please select the appropriate credit type AND dates of workshops you will be attending.
2 workshops = 1 credit

Bullet Iowa Core ELA Grades 3-5: Quality Instruction and Assessment
This course is full. You may sign up for the wait list and will be notified in early June if there is an opening.

This course will be an introduction to the Iowa Core ELA standards with the content based on the meaning and intention of the Iowa Core ELA standards, as well as the pedagogy of teaching and assessing the standards with fidelity. Participants will examine the Iowa Core English Language Arts Standards with a focus on the history, development, format, and structure of the standards. They will deconstruct (unwrap) the standards to determine the concepts and skills that are embedded within each standard.

This will lead to the creation of learning targets for selected standards. Teachers will connect the unwrapped standards and learning targets to create integrated, standards-based lessons. These lessons will be based on the pre-designed units (units 1, 3, and 5) that will be provided. The expectation is that the units will be implemented throughout the school year with support from the coach and the collaborative grade-level team from the cohort.

Participants will also engage in learning based on the Gradual Release of Responsibility framework for quality instruction. Creating standards-based focus lessons that include purpose, learning targets, and modeling will be the basis of the observation and coaching conversations for the course.

Participants will work collaboratively among and across districts to design standards-based lessons (within the pre-designed unit provided) for which they collect, analyze, and use data to inform instruction. Participants will engage in monthly coaching (Sept., Oct., Nov., Jan., Feb., Apr.) that includes an observation and coaching conversation with an AEA coach.

          Bullet Early Literacy Summer Institute
The early literacy skills that are developed during the preschool years have a strong relationship with later literacy skills. The Early Literacy Summer Institute is designed for early childhood educators, administrators, and instructional coaches who work in preschool programs. This course will engage participants in learning that supports the implementation of research based effective practices that promote intentional literacy experiences in preschool classrooms.

Day 1 will feature Dr. Laura Justice, an EHE Distinguished Professor, Teaching and Learning Administration, Executive Director of the Schoenbaum Family Center and the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy at The Ohio State University. Dr. Justice´s research primarily focuses on young children who exhibit developmental vulnerabilities in language and literacy acquisition. Much of her research considers the effects of teacher- or parent-implemented interventions on children´s learning, including the effective use of storybooks. Dr. Justice’s presentation will focus on literacy development in young children, the importance of explicit/systematic instruction to build literacy skills, the use of book reading/read alouds for teaching foundational literacy knowledge and skills, and strategies to scaffold and differentiate instruction to support children’s differing literacy skills.

Day 2 will focus on research-based instructional practices and strategies that support young children´s early literacy knowledge and skills in the five key areas of literacy development that correlate and have been shown to be predictive of later literacy outcomes – oral language, phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, print concepts, and writing.

3 additional hours of on-line contact hours are required in addition to the face-to-face dates. Online content links will be shared by instructor for webinars and videos.

This course is being offered through a grant from the Iowa Department of Education. Each district represented at both days of the training will receive one copy of Read It Again-PreK, a preschool curricular supplement that promotes language and literacy foundations developed by Laura Justice and Anita McGinty; a set of the 15 children´s books used in Read It Again-PreK; and a set of the Read It Again-PreK Lesson Materials. Please note that these materials will go to each district rather than each participant.

Bullet Visual Phonics: An Essential Strategy for Literacy

Visual Phonics is a multisensory strategy that aligns with brain-based learning & teaching. It has proven to be an effective method for acquisition of phonological & phonemic awareness and phonics skills - foundational literacy skills that are necessary for success in reading, spelling & writing. The Visual Phonics strategy can be used in General Education classrooms, preschool settings, elementary & secondary Special Education programs, ELL programs, speech & language programs, classrooms and itinerant services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing, and adult literacy programs. Visual Phonics is also an effective tool for helping students with speech disorders to develop/modify speech sound production, beginning as early as age 2. Since the Visual Phonics system is based on the sounds of English, teacher and student use of Visual Phonics hand shapes (which emulate how sounds are produced in the mouth) provides visual & kinesthetic inputs in the process of mapping sound-to-print . . . a critical skill for literacy development and proficiency. Application related to MTSS and Common Core State Standards will be also be addressed.

This course is appropriate for Paraeducator recertification; it is recommended that teacher/para teams attend together or the Visual Phonics strategy is used in the school.
