Participants of this course will be making explicit connections between their content areas and the Iowa Core ELA literacy standards expected of all teachers. This course will provide participants a working knowledge of the literacy expectations of the Iowa Core for teachers of CTE, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, and World Languages. Participants will examine the key shifts in literacy instruction as they explore their role as providers of standards-based instruction in reading and writing as it relates to their teaching role. Instructional routines and strategies will be provided for implementation in the classroom such as close reading, think aloud, reciprocal teaching, summarizing, argumentative writing, informative writing, reading for main idea, citing textual evidence, and questioning during reading. To apply the instructional routines and strategies, participants will develop standards-based lessons to implement in their classrooms with their content. Participants must attend all sessions to receive credit.
