LETRS 101 Modules 1-3 (EDMA)


LETRS courses are open to DCSD special education K-12 teachers only.

This is an advanced graduate level course for educators deepening their understanding of language-literacy. The scientifically based reading research information solidifies the deepest, mental model level, using up-to-date brain research that collectively plays into the complex role of reading, writing, and spelling. This intense course instruction consists of 30 hours of intensive training over three precise models that intertwine themselves in developing a profound understanding of the progression of the complex process of reading. The course content to be covered in detail includes:
• Module 1- The Challenge of Learning to Read: why reading instruction is a national priority, learning to read is not natural, what the brain does when it reads, how children learn to read and spell, dyslexia and other causes of reading disability, the research base for understanding reading, and leadership to improve reading and language skills.
• Module 2- The Speech Sounds of English: Phonetics, Phonology, and Phoneme Awareness: phonology and phonological awareness, discover the speech sounds of English, phonology and spelling, understanding language differences, teaching phonological skills, and assessment of phonological skills.
• Module 3- Spellography for Teachers - How English Spelling Works: how print represents speech and the 5 Principles of English Spelling which include: principle 1- the history of English explains spelling; principle 2- we spell by phoneme-grapheme correspondence; principal 3- we spell by the position of a phoneme; principle 4- we spell by letter patterns; and principle 5 -we spell by meaning.
