Bullet Best Practices: Mathematically Productive Engagement

During this course, you will collaborate with colleagues to develop deepened understanding of mathematically productive teaching practices that align with research about how students learn mathematics. You will learn to analyze and enhance the extent to which your teaching practices foster equitable, status-free, and mathematically productive teacher and student collaboration.

You will learn to implement instructional tools, strategies and structures that support the development of a carefully crafted, status-free mathematical culture of effort and growth in which every student engages continuously in mathematical sense making, conjecturing, justifying, and generalizing (thus developing powerful mathematical habits of mind and internalization of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice) every student develops a growth mindset, intellectual autonomy, and self-efficacy as a mathematician; all students collaborate and interact in ways that show accountability to the mathematics, to learning, and to each other.

Participants must have completed Best Practices in Teaching Mathematics to enroll. Click here to register for the summer 2014 session.

Registration for this course will close on 7/7/14. Registrations after that date will be charged a $25 late fee.

          Bullet Mathematical Mindsets
This course is open only to Bettendorf CSD staff.

This course unpacks the teaching approach that was used in an 18-lesson intervention that raised the achievement of students learning mathematics by the equivalent of 1.6 years of school. In the teaching intervention, Jo Boaler taught 6/7th graders by giving the students new knowledge of the brain, mindset and mathematics learning and taught through open, creative mathematics.

The course includes over 30 videos of the teaching and interviews with students. It also includes interviews with mindset guru Carol Dweck and leading mathematician Steve Strogatz. The course will be helpful for teacher of mathematics, K-16, and leaders of mathematics. It consists in-person sessions allowing participants to process the information from the online portion of the course with colleagues and brainstorm ways to implement what has been learned in mathematics classrooms.

Bullet Transitioning to Iowa Core Mathematics High School Geometry

The Iowa Core Mathematics Standards expects mathematically proficient geometry students to experiment, explain, prove, visualize, understand, derive, and translate between representations. Students are expected to demonstrate geometric habits of mind and be proficient in the standards of mathematical practice. This expanded view of student proficiencies will require that teachers have greater flexibility and deeper content knowledge. Teachers will need to employ a greater variety of teaching strategies and weave deep mathematical content and mathematical habits of mind into a well orchestrated whole.

This institute will provide teachers with resources and support in making the needed enhancements and changes in instruction in order to implement the Iowa Core Mathematics Standards for Geometry.

Registration for this course will close on 6/13/14. Registrations after that date will be charged a $25 late fee.
