          Bullet I-Infinite Possibilities: How to Design Tactile Overlays for the iPad - ATIA Webinar

The iPad has become a popular tool for students who are blind or who have low vision. However, few people realize the true potential of its use for these students. Tactile overlays incorporated with new features in iOS 9 can be a game changer for these students. This webinar will describe the best practices in making overlays including specific apps and their features, tools and materials, appropriate activities for the expanded core curriculum, new game changing features in iOS 9, and designing tactile electronic books. A plethora of examples will be shown. Learning Objectives
● Participants will identify three specific features of applications that enable them to be appropriate for making tactile overlays.
● Participants will identify five basic tools that can be useful in making tactile overlays.
● Participants will provide 4 examples of activities using tactile overlays for various areas of the expanded core curriculum.

The ICATER 2016 Assistive Technology Summer Institute will be held July 19-20, 2016 at the Mississippi Bend AEA.

Relicensure and Graduate credit is offered by the University of Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research (ICATER). For more information and to register, visit

The Assistive Technology Summer Institute is a unique summer learning opportunity that combines discussion of current relevant topics in assistive technology with hands-on learning opportunities of some of the most recent and most commonly used assistive technology software programs.

          Bullet 1 - Hour Demonstrations of Assistive Technology for Math, Writing and Reading
One-hour demonstrations of assistive technology in each of the areas of math, writing and reading will be presented. Low, medium and high technology examples will be available. If participants plan to attend only one or two demonstrations (e.g. reading and writing, but not math), please contact the presenters for specific times.
          Bullet AAC - Creating an Environment for Language and Communication Learning
The course will provide a review and practice of environmental considerations for effective language and communication learning for students who require augmentative and alternative communication. General AAC information will be provided in the areas of student skills, assessment and AAC devices. The predominant focus of this class will be on strategies and skills used by communication partners to provide an environment that can maximize language and communication learning.

Welcome to the AT Institute!
This is one of five courses designed around the topic of assistive technology and access to reading and writing.

The focus of this course is accessible instructional materials (AIM) and the 5 Step Process for AIM. This is the first of a five-part a la carte selection of courses designed around the topic of assistive technology and access to reading and writing. This course will provide teachers and AEA staff with a systematic approach to identifying students who require consideration for Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM). Review of the research related to the need for and provision of AIM accommodations will be provided. A five-step, data-based process for determination of students who require reading accommodations will be presented. Assistive technology devices for reading will be reviewed.

The five courses are designed as a combination of face to face and activities/assignments outside of the face to face time. There is one full day of attendance for each course. This course will provide teachers and AEA staff with information and practice around the use of Bookshare, a source of accessible instructional materials. Participants will receive information provided by Bookshare from Train the Trainer Iowa pilot and will have the opportunity to practice book downloads and the use of a free text reader from Bookshare. Demonstration account logins will be available for use during this course.

This course will provide teachers and AEA staff with information and practice around the use of the SETT Framework, curriculum tree, ecological survey for AT use and accommodations, integration of AT, developing the role of paraprofessionals, reduction of prompt dependency, development of self-sustaining skills related to AT use and self advocacy, transition and transfer of AT between educational environments, responsibilities of the district related to provision of AT devices and services and resource information.

Participants will learn to identify students who may benefit from writing AT and to make appropriate AT device trial selections based on the student, task and environment.           Bullet ASIST: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
This course is open only to Davenport CDS employees.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don´t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.

     The focus of this course is accessible instructional materials, AT for writing and technology associated with AT and UDL. This course will provide teachers and AEA staff with a systematic, 5-step approach to data-based decisions and provision of AT related to students who require Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) and writing AT. The Protocol for Accommodations in Reading (PAR, DeCoste), uPAR, DWP and a systematic 5-step process for provision of AT district-wide will be central to the discussion.

Plan to attend the second annual Assistive Technology Conference in Mississippi Bend AEA, cosponsored by MBAEA and The University of Iowa ICATER.

The Assistive Technology on the Mississippi (ATOM) AT Conference includes five strands of learning in addition to a variety of product demonstrations presented via web sessions. Learn about a variety of assistive technology devices and implementation strategies for reading, writing, access, universal design, communication and more. Network with other teachers and staff for new ideas and learn from researchers, product developers, and educators who use assistive technology every day. Presenters include national, regional and local professionals in education and related fields.

          Bullet DeCoste Writing Protocol workshop
The DeCoste Writing Protocol is a formative assessment tool that helps educators identify factors affecting an individual student’s ability to produce writing. The Writing Protocol compares a child’s individual performance across handwriting and keyboarding tasks. It examines spelling performance and writing skills so educators make more informed decisions about instructional strategies and the appropriate use of technology to meet classroom demands. This workshop will provide an overview of the DWP. Participants will complete practice administration during the workshop and results will be reviewed and summarized in the context of recommendations for writing support.

Participants may purchase the DeCoste Writing Protocol or may check out a copy from the AT Loan Library (through MBAEA SNAP, item # RC350). It will be important to have the DWP during the workshop and if the participant is planning to use the ATLL loan, the item should be reserved to match the workshop date. Please note that ATLL checkouts are available only to MBAEA and school district staff within MBAEA.

Nimble web apps can read digital text aloud to students; assist them to gain meaning from the content with dictionary definitions, translations and study guides; and ultimately allow them to express what they have learned by completing worksheets, tests, and written assignments with the ability to circle answers, fill-in-the-blanks, or a writing path from brainstorming ideas through publication.

          Bullet PAR and uPAR workshop

PAR (Protocol for Accommodations in Reading) is a tool to systematize procedures for making data-based reading accommodation recommendations for students based on student-specific evidence. This product was developed by Dr. Denise DeCoste and Linda Bastiani Wilson.

This workshop will provide an overview of the PAR and uPAR. Participants will learn to set up, administer, score and develop and review profiles using the PAR. uPAR information will be presented and reviewed with comparisons between products. Use of these assessments in the context of provision of digital text readers will be discussed for students who are not reading at grade level.
