           Science Notebooks
This course is restricted to the Davenport School District only

The purpose of this course is to provide teachers with the instructional tools necessary to implement a structured science notebook. The science notebook is a record of students’ questions, predictions, claims linked to evidence, conclusions, and reflections – all structured by an investigation leading to an understanding of “big ideas” (not factoids) in science (Klentschy, 2005). The notebook is a central place where language, data, and experience work together to form meaning for students by:
• building on prior knowledge
• engaging students in scientific inquiry
• providing opportunities to reflect and problem solve
• helping students actively construct knowledge and transfer to new situations
• allowing students to individually process and understand science as they perceive it(differentiation.)

Registration for this course will close on September 8, 2009. Registrations processed after the close date of the course will be charged an additional $25 late registration fee.

           Science Safety Workshop
Jack Gerlovich, Iowa´s K-12 science safety expert, will share the latest information regarding science safety in the classroom. Questions please contact Sally Rigeman 563-344-6562.

Each District should bring their District Science Safety CD-Rom or purchase one for $25 when registering.

Uncovering Student Thinking in MS Science: Supporting the Iowa Core [A]
This course is designed to assist middle level science teachers in implementing effective inquiry-based science instruction for all learners, as defined by the statewide science initiative ELI (Every Learner Inquires). Using the Curriculum Topic Study (CTS) process, teachers will focus on uncovering student thinking through collaborative analysis of student responses to research-based formative assessments. CTS, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded project, utilizes a coordinated set of science materials to help educators deepen their understanding of the important science topics they teach. The CTS process integrates the Iowa Core Curriculum, National Standards, research on students’ ideas in science, and opportunities for students to learn science through effective teacher practice.

Note:Participants must have access to: Keeley, Page, Science Curriculum Topic Study. Corwin Press, 2005. Participants will need a Composition notebook.

Registration for this course will close on February 1, 2010. Registrations processed after the close date of the course will be charged an additional $25 late registration fee.
