In the learning environment, uncertainty is a given and is often the cause of
discomfort and stress. Studies show us that being comfortable with uncertainty reduces
anxiety, enhances creativity, and expands our learning opportunities. Working with uncertainty
shifts the mindset from demanding outcomes, to embracing curiosity. During this session, we
will explore the exhibition, Karel Appel: Start Again Like A Child, in the Grand Rapids Art
Museum’s galleries and explore these topics further through studio activities with guest
educator, Jill Eggers. Working with unexpected materials and methods, we will reconnect with
our creativity, and explore ways of breaking down barriers, for ourselves and our students,
fostering a sense of confidence and ability to work with uncertainty in our lives.
