Seclusion and Restraint Training

The Clare-Gladwin RESD is hosting a Seclusion and Restraint Training designed to help staff understand required procedures and maintain full compliance. The session will include an overview of state law, a review of guidance from the Michigan Department of Education, and step-by-step direction on how to document required information in our system.

This training supports CGRESD’s commitment to safe, well-regulated learning environments where student dignity and staff clarity remain at the forefront.

Recommended Attendees

  • Any staff who may be involved in a student crisis situation, including verbal de-escalation or physical intervention.

  • Special education staff: teachers, paraprofessionals, classroom support personnel.

  • General education teachers who work with students who may exhibit escalation or behavioral crises.

  • Administrators who oversee student discipline, safety, or special education compliance.

  • Behavior interventionists, social workers, counselors, and psychologists who help design or support behavior plans.

  • Transportation staff if they may be involved in crisis response on buses.

  • School safety officers or support staff who could be called to assist during behavioral emergencies.

Essentially, anyone who could reasonably be part of preventing, responding to, or documenting a crisis event should attend to ensure safe, lawful, consistent practice across CGRESD.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key components of Michigan’s Seclusion and Restraint law and understand when these practices are legally permitted or prohibited.

  2. Interpret and apply the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) guidance to ensure consistent, compliant responses across settings.

  3. Use prevention and de-escalation strategies to reduce the need for seclusion or restraint whenever possible.

  4. Understand safe, allowable intervention procedures and staff responsibilities during a crisis event.

  5. Accurately document incidents in the CGRESD system, meeting all state and district reporting requirements.

  6. Recognize the importance of maintaining student dignity and safety in all phases of crisis intervention.
