What is Success: Evaluating Attitudes About Language Access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
During this workshop, participants will engage in a series of hands-on exercises and discussion activities intended to facilitate deeper reflection on the personal and cultural attitudes about success, language, and communication that we all bring to our work with deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. We will reflect together on how we each visualize “success” for deaf and hard of hearing children, in comparison with larger cultural ideas about what success looks like (that we might encounter in the media or in films or books, for instance). From this discussion and from the collective insights of the group, we will identify some of the personal and attitudinal barriers that can get in the way of enabling different approaches to successful use of language. Finally, we will work as a group to develop some practical and hands-on solutions to help address these less productive perspectives and enable a variety of pathways toward language skills and communication success.
Target Audience
This workshop is intended for early intervention service coordinators, providers, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, teachers of the visually impaired, early childhood education teachers, speech & language therapists, audiologists, special health care needs consultants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and parents of infants and young children who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or at risk for deaf-blindness.
