Concrete-Representation-Abstract

January 25, 2021

Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA): Addition and Subtraction

This training will instruct teachers on a Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) sequence of instruction, a research-based instructional practice, for the multi-digit addition and subtraction algorithms. Place value and concepts of equality will also be addressed. Teachers will experience this CRA sequence as both a teacher and a learner, and will be prepared to integrate this methodology into mathematics lessons.

Objectives:

  • Describe & model the components of the CRA sequence of instruction for addition and subtraction.
  • Understand the benefits of CRA that impact instruction and learning.
  • Develop skills necessary to instruct students on addition and subtraction using a CRA sequence of instruction.

Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA): Multiplication and Division

The multiplication and long division algorithms can be difficult for students to understand and replicate as they involve more than one operation. Developing a conceptual understanding of the algorithm while also practicing the procedure is critical in raising student achievement. This trainig will support teachers’ learning and implementation of the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) sequence of instruction, a research-based instructional practice, for the multiplication and division algorithms.

Objectives:

  • Describe & model the components of the CRA sequence of instruction for multiplication and division.
  • Understand/represent the connection between multiplication and division using area models.
  • Develop skills necessary to instruct students on multiplication and division using a CRA sequence of instruction.
