Introduction to Tier 1 Reading and Writing Instruction

To help frame project implementation, participants will review evidence-based practices for reading and writing instruction and discuss strategies to help motivate students to engage in complex reading and writing tasks. A scope and sequence for K-12 writing will also be presented. Participants will have an opportunity to use a scope and sequence as an evaluation and planning tool to focus writing instruction on instructional priorities. The workshop will conclude with an overview of best practices in vocabulary with a focus on morphology.

Participants will be able to:

  • List key components of the conceptual framework supporting evidence-based practices in reading and writing for secondary students.
  • Explain how to use instructional strategies to support student motivation and promote self-efficacy.
  • Use the Writing Scope and Sequence to identify instructional priorities for K-12 writing.

Explicitly Teaching the Writing Process

In this workshop participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve writing instruction for secondary students. Instructional practices for tier 1 (whole class) instruction within a multi-tiered system of support will be discussed. Topics will focus on the macro-level components of writing and include how to optimize daily writing practice, support pre-writing strategies, and explicitly teach the writing process (with the POWER strategy). As part of this training, participants will develop a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based, tier 1 writing instruction.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the components of the writing process
  • Explain how to use explicit instruction to teach all components of the writing process
  • Develop a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based, Tier 1 writing instruction
