Foundations of Reading: Phonemic Awareness to Advanced Levels- Train-the-Trainer

This training focuses on research evidence related to phonemic awareness to advanced levels for primary students in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. This train-the-trainer session will help Intermediate Unit Technical Assistance Consultants (TAC) and School District personnel to successfully train educators to implement direct, explicit, and systematic phonemic awareness instruction into daily classroom practice. Specifically, instructional practices shared will support students’ consistent engagement with manipulating sounds at the word, syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme level. Assessments related to phonemic awareness will also be offered. All training materials and related resources will be provided.

Participants will be able to:

  • List the essential phonological and phonemic awareness components that should be included in daily instruction
  • Demonstrate the use of multisensory practices aligned to phonemic awareness instruction by engaging in hand motions aligned to specific Phonemic Awareness skills
  • Demonstrate mastery of the consonant speech sounds of the English language by articulation of speech sounds
  • Demonstrate mastery of the vowel speech sounds of the English language by articulation of speech sounds
  • List the components of a multisensory lesson
  • List the non-negotiables for teaching a phonemic awareness lesson

Foundations of Reading: Sound Walls

Beginning readers need to learn that letters represent the speech sounds of our language. One instructional tool to facilitate this understanding is a sound wall. A sound wall organizes words by place and manner of articulation of speech sounds. Organizing words by speech sounds helps early readers connect phonology and orthography.
This training provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to move from a word wall to a sound wall, grounding the learning in a seminal theoretical framework.

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a word wall and a sound wall.
  • Describe the features of consonants.
  • Describe the features of vowels.

Foundations of Reading: Sound Walls - Train the Trainer
Through the use of an instructional tool, such as a sound wall, students learn to organize words by place and manner of articulation of speech sounds. This training will provide participants with the knowledge base of the importance of articulation and pronunciation and the direct connection between phoneme and grapheme instruction at the K-2 level, while enabling the participants professional development skill set in order to deliver such content.

Participants will be able to:

  • List the features, place, and manner of articulation for consonant sounds.
  • List the features, place, and manner of articulation for vowel sounds.
  • Compare and contrast the features of a word wall to a sound wall.
