Salty Streams and Safer Streets: A STEELS-Aligned Watershed Investigation

Explore Salty Streams and Safer Streets, an 11-lesson curriculum that investigates the impact of road salt on local watersheds and freshwater ecosystems. Centered on the driving question, 'How can we balance winter road safety with the health of our watershed?', students analyze data, monitor water quality, engage in outdoor investigations, and develop evidence-based solutions to a real environmental challenge facing Pennsylvania communities.

Aligned to Pennsylvania STEELS Standards, Environmental Literacy & Sustainability (EL&S) competencies, and the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) framework, this phenomenon-based curriculum provides a ready-to-use model for three-dimensional science instruction. Participants will explore key lessons, experience hands-on investigations, and discover strategies for integrating environmental literacy, systems thinking, and student action projects into middle level science classrooms. Educators will leave with access to free curriculum resources and practical ideas for helping students connect science learning to local environmental issues and community decision-making.

Participating districts will receive a classroom resource kits worth ($1000) so they can apply their new curriculum the next day!
