Supporting ELs with Dis/Abilities

This session focuses on strengthening identification, screening, and equitable decision-making for English Learners (ELs), including those who may need special education and/or gifted services. Designed for administrators, school psychologists, ELD leaders, and special education teams, the session emphasizes using a culturally and linguistically aligned (CLA) lens to ensure accurate and timely systems and decision making based on data.

Participants will explore practices for implementing effective universal screening, analyzing multiple data sources, and using true peer comparisons and rate of improvement (ROI) to distinguish between language difference, disability, and advanced learning potential.

The session will also highlight emerging considerations related to ELs with disabilities and support teams in navigating complex referral and eligibility decisions. Overall, the session equips teams to build coherent, equitable systems that improve identification and outcomes for multilingual learners.
