Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

Credit: Act 48 (No Fee for CSIU schools) /NASW (Fee)

Fees: NASW-PA charges a certificate fee of $15 per NASW Member and $25 per non-member for certificates of less than 16 CEs. For over 16 credits, the fee is $25 for members and $45 for non-members. Appropriate fees are paid by individuals directly to NASW-PA.

• Identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges prevalent in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

•  Recognize common signs and symptoms associated with substance use challenges among children and adolescents.

•  Demonstrate effective communication and interaction strategies when engaging with a child or adolescent in a mental health crisis.

•  Develop the skills necessary to connect youth facing mental health challenges with appropriate professional help and resources.

•  Analyze and apply an enhanced understanding of trauma, substance use, self-care strategies, and the impact of social media and bullying on the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.
