In this session, we will explore effective instructional
strategies to support students who are learning English as an additional
language. Participants will examine the five stages of second language
acquisition and learn how to tailor instructional supports at each stage.
We will dive into the power of nonlinguistic
representations to reinforce vocabulary and conceptual understanding and
explore how cooperative learning structures and intentional peer discourse can
foster language development and student engagement.
The
day will conclude with a focused look at how to support English learners in
core academic areas—English language arts, math, and science—emphasizing
strategies to build confidence with academic vocabulary and the language
conventions specific to each discipline.
