Increasing Student Engagement in the World Languages Classroom: Proficiency and Technology
New Page 1

Moving students toward language proficiency is harder than it sounds but it’s what students to expect to acquire when they show up in your world language classroom. There’s more to it than 1:1 devices, than going “textbook-free”, or than just using the target language 90% or more of the time with students. Join me for a workshop to build units of study for your students on topics related or unrelated to your textbook, find out how to move students toward speaking more in class voluntarily and learn some tech tools for lesson organization, proficiency practice, assessment and more. You’ll leave with activity ideas for the next day, the next month and the next school year and know that you’ve got what it takes to get your students to speak more without losing time with your class!

Invite your colleagues from other schools to join you as collaborative unit planning can be a lot of fun and you get to share the brainstorming and the workload! This interactive “Can Do” focused workshop is well worth a day of making sub plans because you’ll leave with a completed unit and great ideas for future units!

Please bring a fully-charged device to access and do many of the tech activities and any materials you want/need to plan for an upcoming unit!

Meet the Presenter

Jill Woerner, formerly the World Language and Global Learning Specialist at the Indiana Department of Education, has returned to the classroom to lead from the classroom. She’s a seasoned, practicing world language teacher who understands the everyday challenges in the classroom and has been honing her skills in the classroom to ensure that they work with students of varying ages and in a variety of environments. She’ll share her units, her ideas and her experiences to ensure that all participants leave with something that will engage their students in the classroom!
