Peer to Peer- Not Just One More Thing, It Is THE THING!
This half-day professional learning session introduces educators to the evidence-based Peer to Peer Support Program, a cornerstone inclusion strategy promoted by the Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) Project at Grand Valley State University. Designed for general and special education teachers, support staff, and administrators, this training provides a comprehensive overview of how Peer to Peer supports can foster authentic inclusion, build meaningful relationships, and promote positive outcomes for all students.

Participants will explore the core components of Peer to Peer, including its purpose, structure, and documented impact on students with and without disabilities. The session will highlight the “Participation Model” — which centers on student belonging, contribution, and access — and contrast it with the more limiting “Helping Model” often associated with charity or deficit-based approaches. Educators will learn how to embed peer supports into everyday classroom routines and social opportunities, increasing engagement and social communication while preserving dignity and autonomy.

The training will also include a review of current data and outcome research demonstrating the significant academic, behavioral, and social benefits of Peer to Peer programs. Participants will leave with practical tools and planning strategies to initiate, expand, or refine peer support efforts in their own school or district.
