Great Expectations Summer 2019

Audience: 
K-12 Teachers, Administrators and Counselors

Great Expectations® is a professional development program that provides teachers and administrators with the skills needed to create harmony and excitement within the school atmosphere, elements that are basic for inspiring students to pursue academic excellence. With a focus on the human quality of teaching and learning, Great Expectations provides renewal and inspiration for teachers and administrators.

Great Expectations® is an answer for all schools regardless of size, geographic location, student demographics, or economic base. Great Expectations creates an infrastructure that promotes improved student self-esteem, attendance, discipline, and parent participation - all of which result in improved academic achievement.

Drawing from many time-honored, research-based learning theories and practices, training is structured to provide insight and practical application strategies designed to engage students in becoming self-directed learners, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and cooperative contributors in the classroom as well as in society. Training encompasses the very best of what is known about teaching and learning today.

Teachers will work in an informal, relaxed, yet energized setting with Great Expectations trainers using their own curriculum materials in this summer camp experience.

Get energized before the school year begins, earn 3 graduate credits or 24 SCECHs, and learn how the atmosphere in your classroom can change into a respectful, encouraging climate. A powerful experience for all!

Methodology I for Elementary Educators: Experienced classroom teachers/GE trainers share basic practices, methods, and theories of Great Expectations®. Grade level is based on enrollment (PK-5/6) The methodology course includes information about the following:

  • Magic Triad
  • Complete sentences
  • Creeds, recitations, and poetry
  • Classic literature, myths, and fables
  • Word identification skills
  • Character development
  • Discipline involving logical and natural consequences

Methodology I for Secondary Educators: This session is an intense, stimulating look at the philosophy and basic tenets of great teaching. Presenters will model strategies and guide you toward more academically rigorous teaching. Learn how to develop students with self-discipline
and critical interpersonal skills. The role of a teacher has never been more important! Grade level is based on enrollment Middle School (6-7/8) or High School (9-12). Components of the course include:

  • Adopt a sense of urgency for preparation for the 21st Century
  • Build learning capacities and competencies for CCSS
  • Explore strategies and dropout prevention
  • Inspire an unlimited future for students
  • Develop virtuous citizens

Returning Participants can choose between Methodology I, Methodology 2, Methodology 3 or an Advanced Elective.

Methodology 2: Returning Participants and Administrators who have previously attended GE Methodology are encouraged to attend Advanced Sessions. If returning for a third or fourth year, Elective Courses have been selected to meet your needs and reinforce the Tenets and Classroom Practices in a very practical way.

Methodology 3 (1-Day): An energetic and inspirational advanced course for educators who have previously attended both GE Methodology I and II.  A one-day course, this class provides GE educators with a plethora of new structures, ideas, and activities to incorporate immediately in the classroom/building. It is a time to Review and Revisit the 17 practices as well as Reconnect with colleagues and Rejuvenate your passion for both teaching and learning.

Principal Unity (2-Day-July 15-16, 2019): Calling all administrators --come to join Kelly Shuck, a former GE Instructor and current principal of a rockin' GE school as she shares tips and strategies for successfully leading your school to model school status. You don't want to miss this fun-filled two-day opportunity! Methodology I is a prerequisite for this course.

Advanced Elective (2-Day-July 17-18, 2019): Implementing the 17 Practices for Special Education Providers
This two-day advanced elective course will address the unique challenges of the K-12 special education provider using a variety of service models, including co-teaching, resource room, direct instruction, small group intervention and more. Prerequisite: Methodology I. This course needs a minimum enrollment of 15 people.

Course Outcome: 
Participants will learn about and begin to establish BEST PRACTICES for engaging students in online opportunities and mentoring practices.

Note: Courses will run based on enrollment. A minimum of 15 participants is required for an advanced course to run.

3 SVSU Graduate Credits: $1,790.85
3 CMU Graduate Credits: Price coming soon.
If you have not been a student at CMU for the past 2 years, a $50 registration fee will also apply.
If you have college credits issued from CMU or SVSU, the registration fee still applies. There may also be a college technology fee applied to the credits.
