G.I.A.N.T.S. Grade 5

Geographic Inquiry and New Temporal Sequencing in Social Studies

The 5th-grade 7-part series examines the connections between spatial (geographic) and temporal (historical) thinking. Within the context of the revised 5th grade GLCEs, (U.S. history from the 15th century to approximately 1795), comprehensive curricular units, that include research-based instructional strategies for teaching spatial thinking through the Arc of Inquiry, hands-on activities, literacy strategies, and best practices in both formative and summative assessment will be modeled at each session. As a result of the incorporation of disciplinary-specific, critical thinking skills brought about by the design of The C3 Framework, this curriculum and accompanying professional development network are the best tools to assist 5th-grade social studies teachers in developing inquiry-based instructional units.
