G.I.A.N.T.S. Grade 3

Geographic Inquiry and New Temporal Sequencing in Social Studies

Designed and facilitated by West Michigan teachers and social studies consultants under the guidance of Dr. Phil Gersmehl, this 4-part series examines the connections between spatial (geographic) thinking and its integration with the disciplines of history, civics, and economics through the context of Michigan studies. Comprehensive curricular units that include research-based instructional strategies for teaching spatial thinking through the Arc of Inquiry, hands-on activities, literacy strategies, and best practices in both formative and summative assessment will be modeled at each session.  As a result of the incorporation of disciplinary-specific, critical thinking skills brought about by the design of The C3 Framework, this curriculum and accompanying professional development network are the best tools to assist 3rd-grade social studies teachers in developing inquiry-based instructional units.
