LETRS: Unit 5 The Mighty Word: Oral Language and Vocabulary
 LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is professional development that provides teachers with the skills they need to master the fundamentals of reading instruction. The four units of LETRS Volume 2 are focused on the language and reading comprehension domains of the reading rope. Authored by literacy experts Dr. Louisa Moats and Dr. Carol Tolman.  This edition of LETRS is a series of blended content.

Course Requirements – LETRS 3rd Edition, Volume 2 Participants are expected to complete both the online course and the Participant's Manual reading (Volume 2, Units 5-8) as well as attend the live, in person facilitated sessions*. The online course is delivered through LETRS online platform and includes video instruction, activities, and a Check for Understanding assessment at the end of each session. Participants must score 80% or higher to advance, as content is unlocked sequentially. Each session concludes with a Bridge to Practice activity connecting learning to classroom application. The Participant's Manual should be referenced before, during, and after each online session.

Unit 5 is titled The Mighty Word: Oral Language and Vocabulary and includes describing vocabulary's role in language and reading comprehension, creating mental maps of well-known words, explicit and direct vocabulary instruction and creating a language rich classroom.

*Act 48 is only awarded for in-seat time for the in-person facilitation.

Unit 6 is titled Digging for Meaning: Understanding Reading Comprehension. This unit delves into the goal of reading comprehension - creating a cohert mental model; the connection of vocabulary, background knowledge, and reading comprehension; importance of syntax including sentence and paragraph structure; text structure and coherence.

The four units of LETRS Volume 2 are focused on the language and reading comprehension domains of the reading rope. Authored by literacy experts Dr. Louisa Moats and Dr. Carol Tolman.  This edition of LETRS is a series of blended content.

This penultimate unit agenda goes into theoretical models like the rope model and the mental model. It includes a narrative text lesson plan as well.

Unit 7 is called Text-Driven Comprehension Instruction. This unit reviews effective comprehension strategies before, during and after reading such as student-generated questions, rereading and revisiting text with a purpose, and preparing to teach narrative and expository texts with planning tools such as the Comprehension Planning Checklist and Story Framework.

Unit 8, The Reading-Writing Connection is the final LETRS unit.  It is about why writing is so challenging, including transcription and composition skills.   Transcription skills include handwriting, spelling and building sentences and sentence types.  Composition includes developing types of writing including narrative, informational and opinion writing pieces.  Assessing student progress is a focus through the unit.
