Zekelman Holocaust Center Teacher Education Series on the Holocaust

Pop-Up Holocaust Museum

The Zekelman Holocaust Center, in partnership with the Adrian Diversity Event Fund, is offering a free Teacher Education Series on the Holocaust, open to educators at all grade levels.

These professional learning sessions will take place inside the Pop-Up Holocaust Museum in Downtown Adrian (136 E. Maumee across from the Croswell), open March and April 2026. Educators will have the opportunity to learn in the museum space, surrounded by primary sources, artifacts, local history items, and curated exhibits that enrich classroom instruction.

Description

This workshop introduces best practices for teaching the Holocaust in age-appropriate, meaningful ways. Educators will explore classroom-ready resources from Echoes & Reflections and the USC Shoah Foundation’s iWitness survivor testimonies, with a focus on inquiry, critical thinking, and empathy. Participants will leave with practical strategies they can use immediately in their classrooms.

Description

Teaching the Holocaust can be emotionally challenging for both students and educators. This session focuses on trauma-informed approaches that help create supportive, respectful learning environments. Educators will learn strategies for presenting difficult content thoughtfully, using tools such as poetry, literature, artwork, and primary sources to help students reflect, process, and engage safely.

Description

How do we help students understand Night within its historical and human context? This workshop provides background on Jewish life and antisemitism in Eastern Europe and explores instructional strategies for teaching Wiesel’s memoir using Echoes & Reflections resources. Participants will discuss key themes, antisemitism, guiding questions, and the continued relevance of Night for students today.

Art served as a powerful form of expression and resistance during the Holocaust. In this workshop, educators will explore artwork created by victims and survivors during and after the Holocaust and discuss how creative expression preserved dignity, identity, and humanity. Participants will consider how art can be used in the classroom to deepen understanding and reflection.

Description

How does genocide begin, and how can we help students recognize early warning signs? Using tools such as the Pyramid of Hate and 10 Stages of Genocide, this session helps educators teach genocide as a process that unfolds over time. The workshop emphasizes civic responsibility and introduces the Pyramid of Peace, encouraging students to see themselves as informed, engaged upstanders.
