The Writing Toolkit for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: Writing Strategies

This session concludes the training series on effective writing practices for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Content emphasizes how to make the writing process work by selecting and explicitly teaching novice writers strategies used by expert writers through self-regulated strategy development. Self-regulated strategy development stages of instruction will be presented, and examples of specific writing strategies and mnemonic prompts will be discussed. Overall, the use of writing strategies pulls content presented in the webinar series together because the purpose of strategic writing is to help students develop self-efficacy, ownership of the writing process, and independent use of writing strategies.


Participants will:

  • Identify and select potential strategies for writing instruction
  • Follow the stages of explicit, SRSD instruction
  • Understand how SRSD instruction promotes student self-efficacy about writing

Target Audience

Teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individuals Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
