The Writing Toolkit for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: Writing for Content Area Learning

This session continues the examination of effective macro-level writing practices for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Topics focus on writing for content area learning and include how to explicitly teach students to respond to text by writing by identifying main ideas and details, summarizing, question asking and answering, and notetaking. Specific writing to learn strategies and inquiry-based writing projects will also be discussed.


Participants will:

  • Describe how to explicitly teach students how to respond to text by writing (e.g., note taking, summarizing, question answering)
  • Identify appropriate writing to learn strategies for inclusion in content area instruction
  • Identify key research-based instructional features for inquiry-based writing opportunities like report writing

Target Audience

Teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
