    Computational Thinking Without the Screen

Computational Thinking Without the Screen is a two-day professional learning experience designed to help educators meaningfully integrate computational thinking (CT) across disciplines—without relying on screens or coding.

While computational thinking is embedded within the Science and Engineering Practices of the PA STEELS standards, this training intentionally extends beyond the STEM classroom to support implementation in ELA, social studies, mathematics, the arts, and interdisciplinary learning.

Participants will explore how the four core concepts of computational thinking—decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design—can deepen inquiry, problem-solving, and sense-making in any learning environment. Through hands-on, collaborative activities, educators will design CT-integrated lessons and assessments that are developmentally appropriate, equity-centered, and immediately classroom-ready and off-screen.

    Learner Outcomes

By the end of this two-day training, participants will be able to:

    • Define computational thinking as a thinking process, not a technology skill
    • Identify how CT connects to standards, practices, and inquiry-based instruction
    • Apply CT concepts using unplugged, low-tech instructional strategies
    • Design CT-integrated lessons and assessments for their own grade level or discipline
    • Identify which CT concepts have the greatest impact in their instructional setting
    • Use a CT framework to find and adapt classroom-ready examples
