    Developmental Norms and Milestones – What is “Typical”?

    This professional development activity addresses preschool early intervention eligibility guidelines and policies and procedures. The session focusses on developmental norms from ages 2 through 6 within the areas of cognition, communication, social and emotional, physical, adaptive and sensory. The session defines and differentiates between slight deviations from the developmental norms and delays, as well as special considerations for each domain section.Elwyn OT practitioners and internal/external staff working in early intervention

    Presenter Bios:
    Kelly Cuthbert is a licensed occupational therapist who received her Masters of Occupational Therapy from West Virginia University in 2014. Since graduation, Kelly has been employed by Elwyn Early Learning Services, located in Philadelphia, PA, where she provides Preschool Early Intervention services to children ages 3-5 in Philadelphia County. Kelly has worked in a variety of settings through her employment with Elwyn ELS, including in-home services, center-based services, and community-based services within daycares, preschools, and other early childhood learning environments. Kelly has additional experience servicing the birth-three population within Philadelphia county, as well as experience with teenagers on the Autism Spectrum.

    Rani Patel is a licensed occupational therapist who earned her master's degree in occupational therapy from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (now St. Joseph's University) in 2011.  She then joined Elwyn Early Learning Services in Philadelphia, PA and has been supporting preschool-aged children through early intervention services in schools, homes, and center-based settings. After taking a brief pause in 2020 to welcome her son, Rani returned to Elwyn as an Occupational Therapy Specialist.  In this role, she helps meet evolving needs of the program.  One aspect of which includes delivering professional development trainings for staff and community partners.

    Learner Outcomes

    Learning Objectives/Outcomes: 

    1. Participants will apply their knowledge of preschool early intervention policies and procedures. 

    2. Participants will demonstrate their understanding of developmental norms in case study scenarios. 

    3. Participants will distinguish between slight deviations from developmental norms and delays warranting specially designed instruction.
