This learning experience will help participants grow in all categories, but namely the Engage &
Instruct category. There is more we can do to facilitate instruction so that our English Language
Learners are able to learn at the same level as their peers who are proficient in English. We will
focus on strategies that our book suggests, discuss options, apply strategies, and reflect on our
progress through reading and collaborating with this book. This will also help us to make more of
our students who are learning English feel welcome in our classroom and more connected to our
school community through positive participation in a music ensemble.
The book we will be reading has several pedagogical tools and strategies that we can add to our "teacher toolbox" for reaching all students. There are rarely opportunities for music educators to receive professional development training that is specifically designed for working with English Language Learners in the music classroom. This book will serve to fill that gap and give us more instructional tools to increase student learning for our multilingual and English-Learning students.
