Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) is the systematic process of investigating and assessing concerning behaviors. The primary goal of the BTAM process is to evaluate the difference between making a threat and posing a threat to a school community and then to work collaboratively with families and students to mitigate life situational factors contributing to thoughts of violence and aggression. This is the basic Michigan K-12 Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (Mi-BTAM) model endorsed by the Michigan State Police Office of School Safety (MSP/OSS), with additional application and practice. It is based on current research in the field of behavioral threat assessment and is aligned with the National Threat Assessment Center’s guidance and effective practice recommendations.
