Event Details

What Works in Writing for Grades 2 & 3

Grade level teachers will participate in professional learning based on best practices in writing instruction aligned with the Common Core State Standards for writing.

Participants will explore writing practices that include: interactive writing, shared writing experiences, conferencing, student goal setting, the use of mentor texts during writing, and providing students with authentic writing purposes.

Participants will leave with strategies, resources, and implementation materials to be used back in the classroom.   

Layout of Professional Learning:

2 Sessions; 3:30-4:30 each

1st session:

  • Engage in learning the content 

  • View examples of writing strategies

  • Co-plan student learning experience 

Over the following week teachers implement co-planned student learning experiences in the classroom (either virturally or in-person).

2nd session:

  • Reflection of classroom experience

  • Sharing of additional strategies 

  • Plan additional classroom experiences 


Participants may...

  • Register for one or any combination of sessions

Districts may…

  • Choose one or any combination of sessions to be provided in-district or virtually


Each professional learning includes:

  •  Resources and materials to implement strategies discussed and learned
  • 2 SCECH’s per session completed
  • Mentoring and support implementing the content shared


Nov 30 & Dec 7: Interactive and Shared Writing

Jan 7 & Jan 14: Writing with an Authentic Purpose

Feb 1 & Feb 8: Writing Conferences and Goal Setting

Feb 1 & Feb 22: Using Mentor Text in Writing Instruction
