National Road Bicentennial Symposium

The National Road Bicentennial Conference will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA.  2018 marks the bicentennial of the opening of the Eastern Legacy portion of the National (or Cumberland) Road from Cumberland, Maryland, to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia). The National Park Service at Fr9iendship Hill NHS and Fort Necessity NB has partnered with W&J College and the National Road Heritage Corridor to commemorate this important milestone and to recognize the National Road's significance and legacy.

The keynote presentation, titled "Even Adam Smith wanted Roads and Canals," will be given by John Lauritz Larson, Purdue University.

The symposium will also feature a special presentation by Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, President Thomas Jefferson, and President James Madison, portrayed by Ronal Duquette, Tom Pitz, and Kyle Jenks, respectively.

The symposium will bring together scholars studying the National Road and transportation networks with representatives from museums and historic sites. This will provide educators with an opportunity to learn about the importance of the National Road and its significance in history.

The symposium includes a round table session in which professionals from sites interpreting and promoting National Road history will discuss making the topic accessible to different audiences, including educational groups. This discussion will be especially relevant for teachers interested in taking advantage of local resources for lessons as it will reveal what sites along the national Road have to offer in the way of educational programs and activities.
