Building the STEELS Framework: Using OpenSciEd to show Ambitious Science Teaching

This professional learning series is designed to equip educators with the practices and tools needed to create engaging, student-centered science classrooms. Each session focuses on key instructional practices aligned with the STEELS standards, Ambitious Science Teaching practices and the OpenSciEd framework.

Day 1- January 15, 2025- Mulberry Mills - Bloomsburg - educators will explore how to introduce phenomena to spark student curiosity and develop thought-provoking questions that drive inquiry.

Day 2- January 29, 2025- Mulberry Mills - Bloomsburg -will focus on building coherent storylines that connect each lesson, ensuring that students’ learning experiences are interconnected and meaningful.

Day 3- February 28, 2025-  Montour Preserve- Danville - centers on sense making discussions, where teachers will learn strategies to encourage students to share, refine, and deepen their scientific understanding through collaboration and discourse.

Day 4- May 5, 2025- Mulberry Mills - Bloomsburg - participants will explore methods for supporting and assessing students' progress, with a focus on formative assessment techniques and scaffolding that meet diverse student needs. By the end of this series, teachers will be equipped with practical, research-based strategies for implementing ambitious and equitable science instruction that brings STEELS into the classroom.
