The purpose of this book study is to build a shared, clear understanding of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) as defined by IDEA and to strengthen district-level leadership along with instructional practices that lead to measurable outcomes for students with disabilities. Using Specially Designed Instruction: The Definitive Guide by Weiss, Faggella-Luby, Goran, and Bateman, participants will deepen their knowledge by examining how SDI is defined, designed, delivered, and monitored to ensure both compliance with IDEA and improved instructional outcomes for students with disabilities.
This book study is intended to support educators in leading consistent expectations, guiding high-quality IEP development, evaluating SDI implementation across settings, and addressing systemic barriers to effective collaboration between special and general education. Emphasis will be placed on moving beyond compliance-focused practices toward instructional coherence, defensible decision-making, and sustainable systems that support educators and students.
