High School Dual Language Curriculum

Participants will learn about DL curriculum within the framework of VVSD Dual Language Program with an emphasis on cross-linguistic connections and assessment.

Syllabus
|
Dual Language teachers will work collaboratively with the Dual Language Coordinator to use the appropriate state standards and Spanish Language Arts standards to develop the high school Dual Language coursework. This collaborative process will ensure that the curriculum is aligned to grade-level academic expectations while intentionally developing students’ Spanish language proficiency and biliteracy.
Teachers and the coordinator will identify essential standards, learning outcomes, and language demands to create a coherent Spanish Language Arts curriculum that builds upon the skills students have developed throughout the Dual Language pathway. This work will also ensure alignment between Spanish and English instruction and provide students with meaningful opportunities to make cross-linguistic connections.
The goal is to establish a rigorous, standards-aligned high school Dual Language program that prepares students to demonstrate academic achievement in both languages and continue developing bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural competence.

This professional development is expected to positively impact student achievement by supporting the development of a rigorous, standards-aligned Spanish Language Arts curriculum for the high school Dual Language Program. By collaboratively aligning coursework to state and Spanish Language Arts standards, teachers will provide consistent instructional expectations and intentional opportunities for students to develop academic language, literacy, and content knowledge in Spanish.
The expected outcome is increased student achievement in Spanish and English, continued growth in bilingualism and biliteracy, and greater access to rigorous grade-level coursework. At the school and district level, this work will strengthen the coherence of the Dual Language pathway as it expands to the high school level and establish a more consistent instructional system that supports students’ long-term academic success.
