ANGEL Editors Monthly Workshops 2009 2010

Editors meet every month for two hours at the Matley Computer Lab. Each meeting will be a 2-hour workshop covering a different skill to be learned hands-on by ANGEL editors creating online courses/groups. Topics to be covered are: Evergreen all-online training modules to incorporate or use; how to create assessments; using the ANGEL survey tool; the new ANGEL gradebook; using content agents in ANGEL; using teams in ANGEL; changing the look of your ANGEL group/course with themes and graphics; renaming/reformatting/adding/deleting ANGEL tabs; repurposing content with master courses; shared learning object repositories; best practices in e-learning.
Classroom Instruction that Works I

This class is ONLY for teachers who are "on track" and currently teaching in the classroom. Are you looking for a way to energize your teaching and improve student achievement? Using the inquiry cycle of action research, teachers will work in teams to do an in-depth study of research-based instructional strategies that increase student achievement. Teachers will choose strategies to practice in their classrooms, collect data and assess the results. Results will be discussed and summarized in small groups and presented to the whole group at each class session. Participants will receive one textbook by Marzano. NOTE: Participants will be expected to go back to their classrooms, teach a lesson to their students based on the information they have learned, and then return to share their experiences with the other participants each week. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.

Topics included are: rules and procedures, parent communication, grading/record-keeping, active participation, discipline strategies and more. Classroom Management for Substitutes

This four-hour course is geared especially for substitute teachers. Learn the secrets of success for subbing! Topics include: being professional, maintaining rules and procedures, teaching strategies, discipline strategies and more. There is no inservice credit given for this course.

Dealing with Difficult Student Behaviors - Elementary

This course is a follow-up to Elementary Classroom Management. Topics to be addressed are: Understanding your students and your expectations for them; developing strategies and options for handling negative behavior; knowing how learning styles impact student behavior; using positive reinforcement; pursuing win-win solutions; working with parents; knowing when to remove a student and understanding your circle of control. Dealing with Difficult Student Behaviors - Secondary

Do you ever ask yourself, "Who´s in charge here anyway?" This class is an extension of the popular Secondary Classroom Management workshop. Participants will explore effect techniques for understanding and responding to student behavior. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
GLAD 2-Day Research, Theory and Model

The class covers the works of researchers and educators across the disciplines: brain research and brain compatible teaching, primary language and second language acquisition involving thinking, speaking, reading & writing, as well as research on cross-cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity. The research will be tied directly into specific classroom strategies that allow for differentiation to meet individual student needs and ensures that the teacher covers the Nevada State Standards.

GLAD Refresher & Make and Take

Basic review of key GLAD strategies in a whole class, small group, and one-on-one format. Time to create lesson plans and prepare instructional materials to target grade-level mandated Nevada State Standards using GLAD strategies. Teachers can attend two sessions for 1 inservice credit or four sessions for 2 inservice credits. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
Observation and Feedback

This highly interactive class is designed for educators such as lead teachers, department leaders, deans, administrators, mentors, peer coaches, etc., who observe teachers and give feedback. Topics include: types of observation evidence, evidence vs opinion, scripting, observation tools, adult learning theory, the language of data-drive feedback, and the four domains, among others. The class is built around practice time, watching classroom videos, sharing observation techniques, using the feedback template and conducting planning and reflecting conversations, based upon the 4 domains of the Framework for Teaching. The instructors are Kellie Barrett, Sandy Culp and Corrine Weiser, District Mentors who have considerable experience as instructors and as mentors who observe teachers and give feedback. Administrators are welcome to attend this class, however, there is an Observation, Feedback and Evaluation class designed solely for administrators, which includes topics related to evaluations and Track III processes. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
SIOP Training I (7-12)

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is a research-based teaching method used to improve students’ academic learning. Through its eight components of detailed guidance, SIOP explicitly states the best practices necessary for academic success. In addition to learning about SIOP, participants in this class will explore issues such as culture, second language acquisition, and classroom factors affecting the learning of their students as related to their practice. NOTE: Participants will be expected to go back to their classrooms, employ an aspect of SIOP, and return to share their experiences with other participants each week. While this course is geared toward grades 7-12, K-6 teachers are also welcome. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.

Skillful Teacher K-6

Participants will learn how to be more skillful in their teaching, with emphasis on Domain Three, Instruction. Instructional strategies for each of the components of Domain 3 will be explored, including how to communicate clearly, ask questions effectively, engage students in learning, sustain momentum, give feedback and be flexible. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
Student Engagement Through Differentiated Instruction (4-12)

This series of classes is mandatory for year-two elementary novice and veteran teachers. It is also mandatory for year-two secondary novice and veteran teachers who did NOT complete the series in the last school year, or were not exempted from taking it in the 05-06 school year. This series focuses on all domains of the teacher performance standards. Topics include: essential understandings; differentiated lesson design; on-going classroom assessments. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
Teaching Children In Poverty I

Participants will gain a better understanding of how to teach children living in poverty through completion of Ruby Payne’s sixteen modules on understanding poverty that include the following key areas: resources, language and story family structure, hidden rules, emotional resources, working with parents, discipline, relationships, learning abstracts, planning to control impulsivity and the mental models of sorting, questioning and plan and label. Two workbooks will be provided to each participant. This workshop is available to all WCSD teachers and classified staff. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
Teaching Children In Poverty II
A prerequisite for this class is "Teaching Children in Poverty "
This class will be a continuation of “Teaching Children in Poverty” and will put all the Structures of Learning (What/Why/How/Proof) together. These will be explored through activity-based strategies. Inservice credit is only available if this course is taken during non-contract hours.
Training of Trainers 2009-2010

This class is designed for the novice as well as the intermediate presenter/trainer. It is offered for trainers who would like to refine their workshop design and delivery skills, such as: establishing rapport and group norms, using visual aids, facilitating active participation, handling difficult participants, co-presenting and much more. This course is open to all trainers or prospective trainers of adults.
