Mathematical Tasks and Classroom Discourse

Target Group:K-12 mathematics teachers

Imagine your mathematics classroom where students are highly engaged in a whole-class discussion about a mathematical task. Your students are explaining their ideas, defending their thinking, and questioning each other. Itís possible in every math classroom, but it does not happen by chance.

This type of classroom environment requires the selection of carefully-chosen mathematical tasks and teachers monitoring student responses to frame the discussion and scaffolding of ideas. This class will explore the qualities of meaningful mathematical tasks that provide these discussion opportunities and the 5 practices for orchestrating such discussions. The content of this class is based on classroom case studies in the book 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions.
