Writing workshop, including mini lessons, conferring, writing time, and sharing, is well-established as the most effective protocol for writing instruction.

Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study for Teaching Writing Grades 3-5 provides teachers with the year-long support they need to implement workshop structures, explicit lessons, and conferring strategies to create an effective and productive workshop in their classroom. The course is taught by exemplary writing classroom teachers who have experience with the units. They will guide teachers through each unit/genre by identifying essential lessons for each grade, by clarifying and simplifying aspects and characteristics of each genre, and by weaving 6 Trait and CSAP assessments and rubrics throughout each genre unit.

This course is recommended for meeting both the writers´ workshop backgrouind and the unit-by-unit training requirements for the Lucy Calkins adoption.
