(This session will be repeated on 7/27.)
This session is for teachers that have ELL, SPED, or struggling students that do not understand the basic concepts of numbers or operations. Strategies for helping students make meaning of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division will be discussed and modeled. The importance of the base-ten system will be discussed. The use of mathematical tools to help these students broaden their foundational understanding of these important mathematical concepts will be demonstrated.

This session will give you the opportunity to hear from the TAM teachers as they talk about what they´ve learned from the discovery-based, cooperative-learning type of curriculum used with the Johns Hopkins study. The teachers will give you suggestions on how to incorporate some of these ideas in your own classroom.

This newly-designed workshop will help you answer these questions and analyze the kind of questions you can ask that will promote reasoning and sensemaking on the part of your students. It will also help you consider how to use students´ answers to shape your teaching.
