Rational Number Project Grades 3 and 4


This professional development is designed for teachers who are looking for curriculum that develops fraction and decimal sense based on 3rd and 4th grade Common Core content standards. Teachers will learn how the curriculum was developed, practice using all manipulatives involved in the lessons, and map lessons to their curriculum. The Rational Number Project reflects research on best practices for teaching fraction and decimal and the connections between the two big ideas. This research was conducted through the National Science Foundation. The curriculum created reflects the following beliefs: a. Children learn best through active involvement with multiple concrete models. b. Physical aids are just one component in the acquistion of concepts: verbal, pictorial, symbolic, and real-world representations also are important. c. Children should have opportunities to talk together and with their teacher about mathematical ideas. d. Curriculum must focus on the development of conceptual knowledge prior to formal work with symbols and algorithms.
