Reading Routines: K-1

This three-day training series is designed to help educators support the implementation of two critical early literacy skills: phonemic awareness and phonics. The training will teach “the what, why, and how” of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. Furthermore, it will discuss how to use data to guide whole-group, small-group and supplemental reading instruction. The first two days will examine the research base for phonemic awareness and phonics, focusing on the importance of these critical early literacy skills in learning to read. Participants will also learn, observe and rehearse best practices in phonemic awareness and phonics instruction as well as have an opportunity to begin embedding these practices explicitly within their own instructional materials. The third day of training will examine how to use universal screening, progress monitoring and real-time formative assessment in order to best meet the instructional needs of all students.
