In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the five cultural conditions necessary to promote student investment in thinking and learning, describe high yield strategies that will help create a culture of thinking and learning in the classroom, and explain/use three strategies that will help students think more deeply and critically.
          Bullet CHAMPS
CHAMPS is a proactive and positive approach to classroom management. It is designed to do the following: •Improve classroom behavior (on-task, work completion, cooperation) •Establish clear classroom behavior expectations with logical and fair responses to misbehavior •Motivate students to put forth their best efforts (perseverance, pride in work) •Reduce misbehavior (disruptions, disrespect, non-compliance) •Increase academic engagement, resulting in improved test scores •Spend less time disciplining students and more time teaching them •Teach students to behave respectfully and to value diversity, thereby reducing cultural differences that may manifest as misbehavior •Feel empowered and happy to be in the classroom •Develop a common language about behaviors among all staff •Create a plan for orienting and supporting new staff •Reduce staff burnout During staff development sessions, teachers will learn how to: •Establish a vision for their classrooms •Organize classrooms for student success •Prepare for the first month of school •Specify classroom behavioral expectations •Motivate even the most uncooperative students •Monitor and revise classroom behavioral plans •Correct specific misbehaviors

Recertification is for faculty who have passed the initial training within the last 12 months. This day is a review of the big ideas of the initial session, including the demonstration of safety and nonviolent physical intervention techniques.

Participants will leave with an action plan for creating mini lessons based on curriculum standards, including opportunities to build and work with a network of teachers trying differentiation for the first time. Not only will participants be provided process time to apply what they learn, but they will also benefit from experiencing differentiation as a learner. All participants are required to provide data and artifacts that demonstrate how they have implemented the structures and procedures addressed in the workshop.           Bullet Elementary Number Sense & Math Workshop
This session is designed for K - 2 Math teachers to establish an understanding of Number Sense and how to best develop it in their students. Routines will be discussed and modeled. Teachers will leave with strategies to engage students in developing Number Sense. Time will be built in to share best practices and to develop Number Sense Routines. The Math Workshop model will be introduced in the afternoon as a structure for the elementary Math block of time. Each part will be broken down, defined, and modeled. The Cost of the Workshop is $10.00 for lunch and materials.

          Bullet Introduction to Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Training [A]
SIOP is a research based lesson preparation and delivery system beneficial for all students in all classrooms. Learn how what you are already doing in your classroom fits into the SIOP model and obtain new learning that will help progress your students to the next level in their language abilities. While SIOP is beneficial for all, it is necessary for English Language Learners to make content comprehensible and accessible. This 3 day introductory training will address all components of SIOP at the beginner level. Participants will walk away with practical ideas for application and resources to use in their classroom the next day. Strategies can be used in any classroom with any grade-level. The third day of training will include a check-in to see how participants have been applying the strategies in their classroom. Future advanced SIOP sessions will be offered for deeper learning.

Target Audience: Mentors assigned to New Teachers (k-12) and Instructional Coaches Participants attending this interactive workshop will understand the role and expectations of the mentor/coach, and how to set-up and perform a classroom observation and conference with new teachers about their teaching. Participants will practice observation skills, coaching conversations related to various social styles, and develop a better understanding of how to deal with difficult coaching situations.

Target Audience: Mentor teachers assigned to a new teacher (K-12) Teachers attending this interactive workshop will leave with a clear understanding of MI law related to mentoring new teachers, the role and expectations of the mentor, coaching and reflective questioning models and strategies, and an observation model. Mentors will develop strategies for effective mentoring and maintenance of activity logs, questions to guide coaching, and a myriad of teaching tips, including the text Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov.

Participants will review topic items from the Spring Data Review. Time will be given for teams to gather, study, and make a plan regarding academic and behavior instruction at all tiers.

The New Teacher Academy focuses on classroom management, brain research, roles and expectations of new teachers and their mentors, lesson planning, student engagement, feedback and grading practices, and instructional strategies. First year or transfer probationary teachers will have time to interact with other teachers in collaborative settings to learn and practice the strategies discussed in the academy. Teachers will also be asked to take part in an online course and to provide evidence that they are utilizing the skills discussed during training sessions. Please note: 1st year Teachers are required to attend all sessions of the New Teacher Academy.

          Bullet Reading Routines: K-1
This three-day training series is designed to help educators support the implementation of two critical early literacy skills: phonemic awareness and phonics. The training will teach “the what, why, and how” of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. Furthermore, it will discuss how to use data to guide whole-group, small-group and supplemental reading instruction. The first two days will examine the research base for phonemic awareness and phonics, focusing on the importance of these critical early literacy skills in learning to read. Participants will also learn, observe and rehearse best practices in phonemic awareness and phonics instruction as well as have an opportunity to begin embedding these practices explicitly within their own instructional materials. The third day of training will examine how to use universal screening, progress monitoring and real-time formative assessment in order to best meet the instructional needs of all students.

Socratic Seminar is a technique used for assisting students in understanding text deeply, providing a practical tool for teachers who want all students to achieve content standards at a higher depth of knowledge. Participants will engage in applying five parts of Socratic Seminar to their content. Useful for all students with additional supports for ELL and at-risk students. Resource agnostic.
          Bullet Steps Toward Improvement in Achievement in Science
Participants will be introduced to the Next Generation Science Standards. They will discuss the changes in the standards and how these changes will impact classroom instruction and state assessments. Emphasis will also be placed on instructional strategies to support struggling learners in mastering the science standards. Some guidance as to assessment development for these standards will be provided within the 3 day series. Participation at all 3 days is required to earn Clock Hours. The training will include an in-depth look at the science behind the foundational literacy skills and how they align to the Common Core State Standards. Participants will examine the sequencing of these skills within each K-3 grade level. Time will be devoted to begin the process of curriculum writing.
          Bullet Sturgis - RTI Coaching Academy
Registration is restricted to Sturgis Public School Employees only unless, prior approval has been granted by a Sturgis administrator or an ISD special education administrator. This course will help staff to develop the knowledge and skills to effectively implement Response to Intervention through a coaching academy in 3 part (2 day sessions each) model, including an interactive webinar between sessions. Products that will be developed in Session One include a Culture Survey and Action Plan, Artifacts representing Establishment of 3 Teams and Essential Standards Charts. In Session Two, participants will produce a Unit Assessment Map for each unit of student and a Common Formative Assessment. Session Three will include Completed Certain Access template for both academics and behavior and an Inverted Split Pyramid poster.

          Bullet Tier 2 Secondary Behavorial Strategies
This opportunity will incorporate evidence based strategies to expand schools resources in meeting the behavioral needs of all students. Based on the work from Leanne Hawkin, Randy Sprick, and Susan Barrett, teams will have exposure to various T2 interventions. In addition, teams will have time for problem solving and reviewing the needs of certain students in their current building during team time.
