      Cataloging I [A]

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Horizon and basic circulation functions is mandatory

Cataloging I - New Items is the first and most basic level of cataloging training and must be taken as a prerequisite to any higher level cataloging class. In New Items class participants will learn to

    Navigate Horizon screens, buttons, and menus specific to the task of creating new items
    Recognize the difference between bibliographic records and item records
    Create, edit, copy, and delete item records
The session lasts approximately 3 hours.
      Cataloging II [A]

Prerequisite: Cataloging I - New Items

Cataloging II: MARC21 Bibliographic Format for Beginners

The MARC21 (Machine Readable Cataloging) Bibliographic format is the nationally-accepted standard for computerized cataloging which helps ensure that data in your automated library catalog will be compatible with other systems, catalogs and vendors.

This half-day session explains the structure of the MARC record and its importance in automated library catalogs. Participants will learn to identify components within MARC bibliographic records, to interpret fixed field coding and to apply correct variable field tagging. Emphasis will be placed primarily on books format.

*Offered in rotation with Cataloging I and III.
*Course lasts approximately 3 hours.
*Please note that the primary focus of this training session is on books.

Participants must take Cataloging I: New Items as a prerequisite to Cataloging II.

      Cataloging III [A]

Prerequisite: Cataloging I - New Items and Cataloging II: MARC21 Bibliographic Format for Beginners

Cataloging III - Copy Cataloging

This session will prepare catalogers to search for appropriate records, edit records as necessary, and enter information into the SELCO Online Library system. Topics include:

*Copying records from other databases

*Editing records from other databases

*Brief introduction to CatExpress

*Offered in rotation with Cataloging I and II.
*Course lasts approximately 4 hours.
*Please note that the primary focus of this training session is on books.

Participants must take Cataloging I and II as a prerequisite to Cataloging III.

      Cataloging Roundtable
Join your fellow catalogers in a morning of exploring various cataloging topics. Please come prepared to share and learn!

      Workday for Cataloging [A]
This workday is designed to enhance your cataloging proficiency. You may either bring a box of items from your library and work closely with SELCO cataloger and determine how best to find an appropriate record and copy catalog them for your library. In cataloging, we will use a variety of sources for MARC records including Library of Congress, Z-searching, OCLC CatExpress, and Recorded Books.

      Workday for Serials [A]
This workday is designed to enhance your proficiency with Serials. You may bring a box of items from your library and work closely with SELCO staff. I
