Reference in the Electronic Age
"Reference in the Electronic Age" will be held in 7 locations in MN April 6-30, 2009.

Presenter Bobbi Newman is a Digital Services Librarian who works at the Reference Desk and trains patrons and staff about the Social Web and other tools. Check out her blog at http://librarianbyday.wordpress.com.

Bobbi will show staff how to conduct effective reference interviews, incorporate computer based resources and new technology into library services, how to fill information using resources beyond the immediate collection, and federal, state and local requirements for Internet and computer usage in the library environment.

Monday, April 27, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM--SELCO, Rochester.
Tuesday, April 28, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM--Mankato. (Location to be determined).
Wednesday, April 29, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM--Redwood Falls Public Library.
Thursday, April 30, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM--St. Cloud Public Library.

This workshop meets competencies for MN Certification:
Public Services B4: Conduct appropriate effective interviews.

Public Services A5: Explain library copyright requirements.

Public Services A8: Incorporate computer based resources beyond the immediate collection.

Public Services B8: Is able to fill information needs by using resources beyond the immediate collection.

Public Services B11: Describe how people communicate needs, search for information, receive information.

Technology 2: Understand federal, state, and local requirements for internet and computer use in the library environment.

5 contact hours.

After the workshop, staff will be expected to provide a group training or a one-on-one training for targeted library patrons as described in the MN LSTA Plan (for example, Seniors, children, residents unable to access library services due to geographic or technological barriers) on how to find reliable information quickly and accurately to meet their information needs. This includes using keyword searching, using online databases, and explaining how end users can submit reference requests to the library staff.
