      Boosting Sign Language Skills for Math Concepts, Big Ideas, and Vocabulary [A]

The goal of this workshop is to increase sign language proficiency when signing math vocabulary and concepts. The presenter will model math vocabulary and concepts within the context of Pennsylvania’s Standards Aligned System Curriculum Framework. Participants will view appropriate interpretation examples taken from competencies and big ideas in K-12 classroom settings. In addition, they will view and discuss appropriate protocol when signing math concepts for assessments. There will be opportunities to utilize these math concepts, big ideas, and vocabulary in specifically designed practice activities.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Observe math concepts and sign vocabulary within the context of NCTM and Pennsylvania’s Standards Aligned System
  • Practice and utilize newly acquired math vocabulary and concepts when signing in the classroom
  • View and analyze appropriate interpretations and protocol when signing math concepts for assessments

Target Audience

Educational Interpreters and Teachers who Teach Math to Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.

      Making the Most of Read Aloud Time for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing [A]

This Training is by invitation only. A Key Code is needed to register. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate how classroom read alouds can be used to build student vocabulary and comprehension through strategic text-based discussions. The use of text-focused discourse provides rich opportunities for extending children’s understanding of text and its structures, while simultaneously enhancing vocabulary learning and language. Specifically, the session will highlight how to help students identify differences between narrative and information text, use prompt sheets to retell stories and information text, strategically discuss content in “book clubs,” learn and use new vocabulary words, and use self-monitoring strategies. Overall, the session will discuss strategies for supporting vocabulary and comprehension development in primary grade classrooms (K-3) during classroom read aloud time.

Objectives:

  • Identify how to optimize the use of read aloud time for the purpose of comprehension and vocabulary building.
  • Integrate research-based vocabulary and comprehension instructional routines into current read aloud practices.
  • Synthesize research findings and their implications for using text-based discourse to build comprehension.
  • Use text-based discourse during read alouds to enhance vocabulary and language during comprehension instruction.

Target Audience

Teams of Professionals who work with elementary students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Teacher of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Students(“teacher of record” for reading instruction),administrator, speech-language pathologist,IU reading specialist, SD reading specialist
