3rd Grade Social Studies Network 2009-2010

This series is designed to help teachers implement the new grade level content expectations, Michigan Studies, for third grade. Using the units of study for third grade developed by the Michigan Citizenship Curriculum Collaborative teachers will examine best practices in the teaching of social studies and learn practical instructional strategies for use in their classroom. We will examine techniques to develop content literacy and explore literature connections to social studies content. We will meet August 18 for a kick off session followed by five after-school sessions scheduled throughout the year. Simultaneous network meetings will be held at Oakland, Berrien, Macomb and Genesee ISDs which will allow participants the opportunity to connect with teachers in these locations. The series is open to general and special education teachers, curriculum specialists and grade-level leaders.

Site visit to a middle school using an RtI process
Response to intervention or RtI is a process that involves establishing a continuum of support for all students in academics and/or behavior. Although the primary focus of RtI in the last few years has been at the elementary level, there is growing interest in applying the process to secondary schools. This study group will answer the questions: What is RtI? How does it apply to a middle school environment? What would it look like in the area of adolescent literacy support? Behavior? What are some examples from actual middle schools using this process?
Who: Study teams of 4-6 people consisting of principals (required), teacher representatives, school psychologists, counselors, or school social workers
Materials:
The OAISD will purchase a book for the group to review entitled RTI in Middle and High School: Strategies and Structures for Literacy Success (2009), LRP Publications.

Michigan Merit Curriculum Personal Curriculum ActPoint RoadMap Training

In order to transform the process associated with the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) Personal Curriculum (PC) application to provide a clear, consistent, and accurate step-by-step procedures for stakeholders to follow, MDE has partnered with TransACT Communications, Inc. to develop an automated, self-service decision-tree.
The MMC PC ActPoint RoadMaps are intended to be utilized by school personnel to assist them with implementing the PC process at critical decision-making points, including the following:
- Requesting a personal curriculum
- Determining PC eligibility
- Making Algebra II and additional content modifications
- Making modifications available to students with an IEP
- Making modifications available to transfer students
- Finalizing and implementing a personal curriculum
- Determining whether a PC will lead to a diploma
By utilizing RoadMaps, local districts will be able to achieve consistent MMC PC decisions, aligned with legislative requirements and MDE’s requirements.

One Common Voice-One Plan: The School Improvement Modules Series

Half day sessions each day. Choose 8:00-11:00 a.m. or 1:00-4:00 p.m.
The School Improvement Modules Series is designed to help school improvement teams create a 3-5 year plan that will focus on increased student achievement, as well as incorporate state and federal requirements. The five modules will create the framework for teams to identify their needs, analyze data, and set goals for the future. An emphasis will be placed on understanding how the many components of school improvement and state requirements fit together into a coherent process which facilitates effective school processes.
Module 1: Getting Ready for School Improvement
Module 2: Collecting Data and Building a Profile
Module 3: Analyzing Data and Setting Goals and Measurable Objectives
Module 4: Developing an Action Plan
Module 5: Implementing, Monitoring, and Evaluating the Plan
Each half day session will cover one module, with one extra session provided for more individualized assistance.

Power Expectations Item Bank Training for High School Math & Science Teachers

The Ottawa Area ISD Instructional Services Department, in conjunction with the Secondary Redesign Committee and the Technology Services Department, invites OAISD high school math and science teachers to attend a Power Expectations ELAR Item Bank training opportunity during the months of September or October 2009.
Participants will receive ELAR accounts and the critical knowledge and software experience necessary to use this online assessment software tool to access and use assessment items aligned to the OAISD Power Expectations.
This introductory session will prepare teachers to find, copy, and store items aligned to OAISD Power Expectations.
Key Points:
1) Teachers must attend an OAISD-led training in order to receive ELAR accounts.
2) A second, 90 minute advanced training event will be offered later this fall to cover advanced features like adding and aligning your own items as well as setting up assessments for students to take online.

Each session you will leave with lesson plans for implementing the units with your students. You will have opportunities to share successes and struggles throughout the year and get the support of colleagues to solve problems and share ideas.
The September session will focus on beginning writers’ workshop and laying the foundation for a successful year for you and your students.
Subsequent sessions will address the remaining units of study, aligning them with Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations and developing plans for implementation you can use in your classroom. You must bring your own Units of Study books.
Each full day session will include lunch and each evening session will include dinner.
Target Audience: Educators in Grades K–2 who are just beginning to use the Units of Study or have had no training in their use.
