Becoming a DNA Detective

(For students entering grades 6 to 8) ~ Week 1 and 2 descriptions below) ~ Week 1: Do you enjoy the CSI detective show? This class will introduce you to how they solve crimes using DNA. During week 1, solve your own “whodunit” in a fun packed adventure. Explore the amazing world of DNA and genetic testing. Discover why you have blond hair when your parents have brown hair and more mysteries. Run experiments using the same techniques that scientists use. Isolate DNA, see the magic molecule of life with the naked eye, examine DNA fingerprinting, separate molecules and decode secret messages. Week 2: Wizards and Hogwarts. Harry Potter move over! During week 2, the DNA Detectives are going to perform some real life wizardry. Learn how to turn living organisms green! Explore some genetic magic and learn genetic spells that can be cast to make living things change overnight. What’s all the fuss about gene therapy, cell therapy and genetically modified foods? Are there evil forces at work here? Join us and find out. Tuition includes $15 lab fee.
