This course teaches students the fundamental elements and styles that make up contemporary blues guitar. Familiarity with open position chords and basic right hand strumming and picking technique is needed. The techniques and styles covered will focus on the electric guitar. We’ll explore the playing styles and songs of such influential figures as T-bone Walker, B.B., Albert and Freddy King, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray
Vaughan. Topics we’ll cover include: 12-bar blues and its many variations, such as 8-bar and 16-bar blues; the “quick four”; introductions and endings; the” “turnaround”, shuffle (“uptown” and” “downtown”); jump-swing; the use of blues in rock, funk, soul, and jazz; blues rhythm guitar styles, including simultaneous lead and rhythm. We’ll also focus on various elements of soloing, use of pentatonic, blues, and hybrid pentatonic scales, hammerons and pull-offs, string bending, and how to
construct an effective solo. Students need to bring an electric guitar and small amplifier to each class.
