Target Audience: 6-12 math, science, social studies and English teachers and district leaders, preferably in cross-disciplinary teams
Students need strong literacy skills to be successful in any content area. But the literacy demands of each discipline are slightly different. Participants are encouraged to attend this cross-disciplinary training with colleagues who teach different subjects: English, science, social studies and math. Our goal is to examine the student experience of using different literacy skills and strategies at different times during the course of a school day. In this session, we will learn together in the morning, taking a critical look into each discipline’s standards to identify literacy tasks. We will also look at examples of standardized testing to identify the literacy skills they require for student success. In the afternoon, participants will split into breakout groups by discipline, and MISD consultants will guide them through content-specific strategies to help students succeed. The day will conclude with a sharing session for each team, and a whole-group share out and reflection.
