Target Audience: Secondary ELA Teachers

Students need to be able to notice key features of texts as they read. Many students struggle with this task, but what can teachers do about it? In this session, participants will discover instructional ‘signposts’ they can use to help students comprehend texts. Two professional books from authors Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst are included in this session: Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction: Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies. Participants will explore these two resources to help demystify both literary and informational texts for students at all reading levels. Together we will begin to consider how these signposts can be used in an instructional model that includes modeled reading, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading. This in an introductory session geared to teachers who are new to using the signposts, or have recently begun to incorporate them into their instruction and would like some review and support.
