Target Audience: 6-12 ELA teachers

Independent reading allows student choice in what, when and how they read. But how does a teacher coordinate and monitor student progress? In this session, we will explore the research around the benefits and challenges of incorporating independent reading into the secondary classroom through student book clubs, literature circles and sustained silent reading (SSR). We will examine research about using a readerīs workshop approach to improve each studentīs reading . Topics will include how to build and maintain a classroom library, how to get students engaged in reading on their own, and how to work with students to set and meet reading goals. By the end of the session, participants will have some concrete ideas about how and why to incorporate independent reading into their curriculum. Participants please bring one student-appropriate novel they have read on the day of the session.
